When the northern cancer research foundation helped finance the 3d virtual simulator five years ago, it was a breakthrough in radiation treatment technology. for the first time the radiation therapy network team could take a ct scan of a patient and view tumours and surrounding tissue in three dimensions. this system allowed the team to experiment on the computer with radiation dose levels and pathways around healthy tissue before deciding on a treatment plan. at the time there was only one ct scanner in thunder bay, located at the mckellar site. not only did patients have to travel across town, a system had to be developed to send the computer images back to the cancer centre. with the new use for the scanner, wait times only increased. the long-term plan for the cancer centre was to purchase a dedicated ct scanner. with integration and the move to the new thunder bay regional health sciences centre, an interesting opportunity came up. despite the fact that ct scans used for examining the body diagnostic imaging ; are saved differently than those used for computer simulations, one special ct scanner could handle both jobs. the installation of a new dual purpose ct scanner was a giant leap towards better patient care. according to dr. peter mcghee, head of medical physics, the unit has met expectations and is already making a huge impact on cancer care.
